[英語学習]「鬼滅の刃」の概要紹介でリーディング力をアップ！（英文読解）
今回も英文読解に重点を置いた内容です。
「鬼滅の刃」でも厳しい戦いが続いていますが、私たちも頑張って英文読解に挑戦することにしましょう。
ちなみに残念ですが、今回は第5-7巻に留めます。
第8巻まで英語化されていますが、これはまだアニメ化されていませんので。（無限列車編は英語化されるとのことです）
概要紹介
第5巻
At Mt. Natagumo, Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke battle a terrible family of spider demons. Taking on such powerful enemies demands all the skill and luck Tanjiro has as he and his companions fight to rescue Nezuko from the spiders’ web. The battle is drawing in other Demon Slayers but not all of them will leave Mt. Natagumo alive—or in one piece!
“At Mt. Natagumo, Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke battle a terrible family of spider demons.”
Mt. というのは Mountain（山）の省略形です。動詞はbattleですね。
terrible は「おそろしい」で、良い意味にも悪い意味にも使います。今回の鬼はspider demons 蜘蛛鬼たちだそうです。
battle A (アンダーライン部分) は覚えておくと良いでしょう。ちなみに a family なので、蜘蛛鬼たちの1家族だそうです。
“Taking on such powerful enemies demands all the skill and luck Tanjiro has as he and his companions fight to rescue Nezuko from the spiders’ web.”
主節の動詞がdemands で、従節の動詞がfightです。今回の as は接続詞ですね。主語は名詞句の Taking on such powerful enemies です。
「このような強力な敵を打ち倒すこと」です。コンパニオン（companion）は「仲間」です。enemy は「敵」です。
蜘蛛たちの網（spiders” web）は変ですね。一人としか戦っていないから、the spider’s webで良いかと思います。
“The battle is drawing in other Demon Slayers but not all of them will leave Mt. Natagumo alive—or in one piece!”
draw in は他動詞として機能し、「引き入れる、呼び寄せる、引きつける」などの意味があります。電子辞書のジーニアス英和大辞典には、draw in の用法が細かく紹介されています。
なおother Demon Slyers とは、あの方々のことです。
第6巻
The members of the Demon Slayer Corps are sworn to destroy demons wherever they find them—but the condition of Tanjiro’s sister, Nezuko, is a problem. What will the Hashira—the leaders of the Demon Slayer Corps—do about Tanjiro protecting his own demonic sister? Meanwhile, Kibutsuji assembles his own minions and intensifies his search for Tanjiro…
“The members of the Demon Slayer Corps are sworn to destroy demons wherever they find them—but the condition of Tanjiro’s sister, Nezuko, is a problem.”
鬼殺隊は Demon Slayer Corps と訳されています。members の前に the が付いているのは、正直言って理解できていません。
the と特定するには何かしら特定するものが必要ですけど、この文だけでは分かりません。ちなみに demons の方には the が付いていないので、意図的なものでしょう。
wherever they find them は関係副詞です。「どこで鬼を見つけたとしても」ですね。
sworn の原形は swear で、「誓う」です。受動態になっているのは、仲間が大勢やられたことによって、改めて鬼滅を誓うといったニュアンスを出す為でしょう。
but は接続詞で、それ以降は2つ目の文になります。Nezuko は Tanjiro’s sister を説明する句で、カンマで括られています。
“What will the Hashira—the leaders of the Demon Slayer Corps—do about Tanjiro protecting his own demonic sister?”
do about で「処分を決める」ですね。do はいろんなことに使えるので、I did it! （やったぜ！）のように幅広い意味を持つ動詞として使えます。
（ドラマで、「二人とも始末しろ」という意味で、Do them both! というセリフを聞いたこともあります）
“Meanwhile, Kibutsuji assembles his own minions and intensifies his search for Tanjiro…”
assemble は「集める」という動詞です。エンジニアが組み立て部品を集める時などに、assemble を使います。覚えておいて損はないです。
minion は「子分、手下」という意味です。ここでは手勢の側近ということを表すため、his own minions（彼自身の手下たち）という表現を使っています。
intensify は「強める」という意味ですが、この時点まで炭治郎を探すことはしていないです。さすが翻訳者は、キチンとそこまで日本語版を読み込んでいないようです。
なお his search for Tanjiro の for は、よく使われる用法です。 特に for は search の定番と言っても良いでしょう。何しろ to や at のように明確に方向が決まらないから、search するのですから。
つまり、「鬼滅隊が鬼退治を誓う一方で、鬼舞辻は十二鬼を集め、炭治郎の捜索を強めるのだった」ということです。（ここで集められたのは下弦たちだけですね）
第7巻
While under the care of the Demon Slayer Corps leaders, Shinobu, Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke and Nezuko have recovered. They have even learned a new and powerful technique—Total Concentration! They’ll need this new power and all their skill on their next demon-hunting mission aboard the mysterious Infinity Train as it takes them into the dreams of demons!
“While under the care of the Demon Slayer Corps leaders, Shinobu, Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke and Nezuko have recovered.”
これは正直、TOEICスコア950ホルダーにも辛かったです。Whileは節の前に置かれることの多い接続詞ですが、今回は違います。それから主語は Tanjiro … Nezuko です。
つまり the care of the Demon Slyer Corps leaders, Shinobu で名詞句を形成しています。While under A, S(主語) have recovered. です。
“They have even learned a new and powerful technique — Total Concentration! ”
今回の同格修飾ですが、”,” ではなくて — で区切られています。単なる説明ではなくて、「つまり」といったような意味合いが生じます。
ただし Total Concentration は少し違いますね。既に “全集中の呼吸” はマスターしているので、”全集中：常中” のことでしょう。
英語のアニメ紹介サイトなどでは、Total Concentraion : Constant と表現されています。constant は、「常に、一定して」といった意味を持ちます。
“They’ll need this new power and all their skill on their next demon-hunting mission aboard the mysterious Infinity Train as it takes them into the dreams of demons!”
this new power とは Total Concentration : Constant のことです。their next demon-hunting mission で、「次の鬼狩りの任務」です。
aboard は、日頃は Welcome aboard! (ご搭乗ありがとうございます) のように副詞として使われることが多いです。今回は on に似た接続詞として使われています。
the mysterious Infinity Train で、「神秘的な無限列車」ですね。finite は「有限の」という頻出形容詞です。infinite は in が付いて、「無限の」という意味です。
ファイナイト/インフィニットと発音が変わるので、注意して覚えるのが良いでしょう。
登場人物紹介
さて8巻はアニメ化されていないので、ここでは登場人物紹介をしましょう。
まず、炭治郎です。名詞句の形式で説明されています。
“A kind boy who saved his sister and now aims to avenge his family. He can smell the scent of demons and an opponent’s weakness.”
aim は「狙う」です。aim to不定詞は定番なので、覚えておくと良いでしょう。
avenge は「復讐する」です。2巻を読むと復讐ではなくて正義のためですけど、まあ良しとしましょう。
scent は「香り」です。odor も頻出名詞ですが、私には明確な違いは分かりません。stink は「悪臭」という名詞です。
weakness は「弱点、弱み」です。
次にヒロインの禰豆子です。
“Tanjiro’s younger sister. A demon attacked he and turned her into a demon. But unlike other demons, she fights her urges and tries to protect Tanjiro.”
turn A into B で、「AをBにする」です。urge は「衝動」という名詞です。
義勇さんは、次の通りです。
“The Hashira who invited Tanjiro to join the Demon Slayer Corps.”
join は「加わる」という意味の動詞です。これもTOEICだと基本頻出単語です。
最後は鬼舞辻です。
“Kibutsuji turned Nezuko into a demon. He is Tanjiro’s enemy and hides his nature in order to live among human beings.”
またturn A into B です。enemy は、「敵」という名詞です。hide は「隠す」という他動詞で、nature は「性質」という名詞です。
in order to － は受験でもTOEICでも頻出語句で、 「－ するために」です。live among human beings で「人間の中で生きる」です。「人類の一部」というよりも「人々の雑踏に紛れて」という意味合いなので、in よりも amaong が適当ですね。
まとめ
受験は遥か過去のことですが、学生さんの役には立ったでしょうか。
実用英検だと2級、TOEICだとスコア650程度でしょうか。
生の英語というのは省略や倒置が多くて大変ですけど、「鬼滅の刃」の英語はノンネイティブ（英語が母国語でない者）にも分かりやすい英語で表現されています。
